Welcome to my page on the internet! Help me celebrate!
If you had told me a few years ago that I would try to write in Hausa in the future I wouldn’t have believed you! But look; today Allah has brought us here. I’ve only just started and there’s a lot of work to do. But with Allah’s permission, this goal that I have set before me to become proficient in Hausa will be a success.
My name is Sajida Mohammed. I was born in England in the year nineteen ninety one (1991). In this year of two thousand and twenty one (2021), I will reach 30 years in this world (InshaAllah). It is only now that I have brought my attention to knowing the language of my roots.
All praises to Allah, my parents did their part in teaching us how to speak Hausa. My mother, Safiya (Mama S!), forced all of my brothers and sisters to speak it at home. (She gifted us a huge blessing. May Allah reward her!!) But despite my parents’ hard work, you wouldn’t say that our Hausa is like that of experts.
There was a time I believed that English was enough for me in this world. But I now know that this is not the case. This is why I want to bring my attention to learning Hausa properly – and I want to bring the attention of all my Hausa brothers and sisters who did not grow up in Hausaland to join me; let’s give our language its right!
Our children are growing up without Hausa – even in Hausa-speaking countries. It’s time we stand up and help each other.
I hope that this chapter that I have opened will be a beneficial contribution towards honouring our Hausa Language, Hausa Culture, Hausa History and Hausa People.
*As I am a student in this endeavor, please forgive the mistakes that you notice. If you have the time, please let me know so that I can fix it. Thank you so much! 🙂
